Check Engine Light: Dos And Donts

Posted

Having your own vehicle has its pros and cons, but in the event of troubles looking into them early helps. At one time or the other every car owner finds himself in one quandary that seems hard to fix. And that is nothing but the check engine light illuminating, suggesting that something is not quite right near the engine area. Although the check engine light is in no way a specific indication to the nature of the problem, it still needs attention. And when we say the check engine light gives very unspecific signals, we mean it. What this means is that although the light indicator could mean that some major repair work is due, it could be as frivolous as your gas cap being loose, no joke!

One thing that every auto owner must remember is to heed the check engine light. Most persistent check engine signals may mean that serious repair time is due. So how do you go about reacting to a check engine light? What is the best course of actions? Never fear, help is near! There are several areas to consider when the check engine light comes on, but mercifully most are easily fixed. So here are the top reasons for why your check engine light may be ticking.

Emission Control Malfunction The emission control mechanism of your automobile keeps exhaust clean and helps keep pollution in check. A problem with your emission system may lead to repair time, and with hordes of valves, sensors and heated wiring to contend with, this procedure is better left to a skilled auto repair dealer or garage. Sometimes there may be a problem with your oxygen sensor, and if so this will need to be replaced. In this regard, the check engine light indication may be misinterpreted. Since it is the hydrocarbons that is released into the air that causes pollution, the level was affected by how tight the gas cap was and significantly increased with the gas cap was left off than with the engine up and running. Thus when the emissions are higher the check engine light comes on, and this could mean that while your emission control is fine, the gas cap was too loose. Thus the check engine light may indicate an untightened gas cap even if the emission system is fine.

A Loose Gas Cap A small percentage of the auto problems when the check engine light illuminates could be from a loose or inadequate gas cap. Emission problems or pressure buildup within the gas tank may result in this indication. This is a straightforward process and in case your engine light is steadily blinking, check your gas cap. Having fixed the issue, you engine light may not really go off at once, so wait a week or so before trying another approach.

Issues With Spark Plug Wires The check engine light may come on in case of a glitch in your spark plug. Worn out spark plugs show small splits which cause electricity to pass out rather than into the plug as it should. Check out your spark plugs for signs of wear and tear, and try replacing them.

Unwanted Engine Dampness The check engine light may also indicate a trickle of water into your spark plug or general engine dampness. This could come from rain that finds its way into your hood, or water from a high pressure car wash. Dry up the droplets and see if this gets the engine light indication to stop.

If despite all the check you made, the check engine light comes on intermittently, an immediate servicing may be required. Evidently, proceeding to get your car repaired at your local dealer is the sensible thing to do.
